Docker, Inc.は現地時間2020年12月10日より、Apple Silicon M1チップに対応したDocker DesktopのTech Preview版をDeveloper Preview Programメンバー向けに公開していましたが、現地時間12月16日付けで、このTech Previewが早くも一般に公開(Public Preview)されています。
As I’m sure you know by now, Apple has recently shipped the first Macs based on the new Apple M1 chips. Last month my colleague Ben shared our roadmap for building a Docker Desktop that runs on this new hardware. Apple Silicon向けに開発されているDocker Desktopは、Dockerが2016年にオープンソース化したHyperKitを、AppleがBig Surから提供しているVirtualizationフレームワークに置き換え、Docker Desktopの様々なバイナリをArm向けに再コンパイルしたそうですが、
Docker Desktop自体は現在(Preview 7)もIntelバイナリとなっており、その他HelperやOSXFS, VPNKitなど所々にIntelバイナリが使われているほか、Docker Desktopでも幅広く使用されているGo言語も2021年02月のGo v1.16でApple Siliconのサポートを目指しているため、Docker DesktopのGAビルド(正式リリース)は2021年第一四半期頃になる予定だとコメントされています。
We will use this feedback to help us improve and iterate on both the Desktop product and the multi-architecture experience as we aim to provide a GA build of Docker Desktop in the first quarter of 2021.
