米TeckRevueが先日発売された仮想環境アプリVMware Fusion 8と旧VMware Fusion 7およびBootCampにWindows 10をインストールし複数のベンチマークを行った結果を公開しています。

VMware Fusion 8, the latest version of VMware’s OS X virtualization software, launched last week, shortly after the appearance of its primary rival, Parallels Desktop 11. We’ve already conducted detailed benchmarks comparing Parallels 11 to its direct predecessor, Parallels 10, and native performance via Boot Camp. Now it’s Fusion’s turn to face the same benchmarks.

テスト環境
テスト環境は以下の通りで、VMware 7と8の設定は最高設定では 8CPU, 12GBメモリ, 1GB VRAMという仮想環境を構築。ベンチマークは3回ずつ行い平均値をとっているそうです。

- Host OS：OS X 10.10.5 Yosemite
CPU
CPUのスコアを測定するGeekbenchでは Fusion 8 の Single-Core および Multi-Coreベンチマークのスコア共に Fusion 7 から5%程アップしており、Boot Campにスコアにさらに近づいてきたことが分かります。
Multi-Core performance tells a similar story, with Fusion 8’s largest advantage resting in a roughly 5 percent jump in floating point performance, while both Fusion 7 and Fusion 8 show excellent near-native results when compared to Boot Camp.

GPU
GPUスコアを測定する3DMark (2013)では、Fusion 8 と Fusion 7のスコアに顕著な差が見られており、最大44%グラフィックス スコアが上昇しているそうです。これは Fusion 8 がDirectX 10をサポートしたことが大きく貢献していると考えられており（Fusion 7 は DirectX 9まで）、Fusion 8 ではゲームパフォーマンスなどが大きく改善されることが期待できます。
Ice Storm is the lowest-end 3DMark test and is compatible with DirectX 9, which allowed us to test all Windows configurations. This first test immediately reveals the payoff of VMware’s efforts to increase graphics performance, with Fusion 8 offering huge improvements over Fusion 7, by as much as 44 percent.

System
起動や終了、レジュームプロセスにおいても Fusion 8 では最適化が進んでおり、特にレジュームからの起動は大きく改善されています（Fusion 7 は Windows 10を正式にサポートしていないのも一因だと思われます）。
We verified that everything was configured properly in both the Windows VM and the OS X host, confirmed that no rogue processes were trying to load or surprise background indexing was taking place, and replicated that lengthy result in every test. There’s just something about Windows 10 on our MacBook Pro platform that Fusion 7 really didn’t like. The good news is that Fusion 8 solves that issue completely, and resumes Windows 10 VMs in a snap.

Conclusions
TekRevueでは以上のベンチマークの結果から VMware Fusion 8 は Fusion 7 と比較して安定したパフォーマンスの改善が見られるとして最新のOS（Windows 10など）や5K iMacや感圧タッチトラックパッドを使用する場合にはアップグレードを進めていますが、比較的古いOS（Windows 7 など）やMacを利用している場合はそれほど必要性が無いともコメントしています。
VMware Fusion 8 really impressed us this year, and we were surprised by both its new features and its relatively consistent performance gains over its predecessor.
We can give you a teaser from our forthcoming VM Benchmark Showdown and report that Fusion 8 doesn’t win every performance battle with Parallels 11, but it comes in very strong this year, and is a no-brainer upgrade for Fusion 7 customers looking for support for the latest operating systems or significantly improved graphics performance and capabilities.
