iPad/iPhoneにMacの画面を映し出し、液タブ化するアプリ「Astropad」シリーズを開発しているAstro HQは現地時間2019年01月24日、同社が開発＆販売しているiPadをMacのセカンドディスプレイ/液晶タブレット化できる「Luna Display」アプリおよび「Astropad」シリーズをv3.0へメジャーアップデートしたと発表しています。

Astropad/Luna Display v3.0
今回アップデートされたのはiPad用のAstropad Standard/StudioとLuna Display、およびiPhone向けのAstropad Miniの4製品で、すべてのアプリで同社独自のレンダリングエンジンLIQUIDが「LIQUID v3.0」へアップデートされ、前バージョンと比較してレスポンスが最大2倍、GPUを使用したパフォーマンスが最大4倍向上しており、
- Up to 2x more responsive: You’ll notice significantly reduced latency, smoother drawing, and a faster screen refresh rate (especially over USB and strong WiFi connections).
- Up to 4x better GPU performance: Accelerated GPU support means a smoother and more powerful display performance.

これらは、強いWi-Fi(5GHz)とUSB接続した際に特に顕著に発揮され、今までの比較[1, 2]でもその性能は明らかでしたが、新しいLIQUID v3.0ではAirDisplayやDuet Displayなど他のソリューションと比較してレイテンシーが約5~9倍小さく、よりスムーズな描写が再現できているそうです。

スタイラスペン
また、Astro HQのSenior iOS EngineerのAdam Mikaさんは今回のアップデートで、Apple Pencil以外のサードパーティ製スタイラスペンのユーザー数の減少と、各社のSDKのアップデートが開発の大きな負担になっているとして、
This is the last release that will support third-party styluses in Astropad Standard. Moving forward, only Apple Pencil will be supported in Astropad.

WacomやAdonit, Pogo, Hex, FiftyThreeなどのサードパーティ製スタイラスペンのサポートを次期アップデートで終了すると発表しているので、サードパーティ製スタイラスペンを利用されている方はApple Pencilへの移行をオススメします。
