　Linuxやオープンソース・ソフトウェアの情報サイトPhoronixによると、X Window Systemのプロジェクトを主導しているX.Org Foundationが管理するドメイン「x.org」のドメインが1月19日で失効するそうです。

Unless there’s a miracle, the X.Org Foundation stands to lose one of its biggest assets: its single-letter domain name.
Apparently for the past half-year there have been some “ownership struggles” of the X.Org domain name, which the X.Org Foundation Board of Directors have been trying to resolve in private. However, they haven’t had any luck and the domain name is set to expire now on 19 January.

経緯

　x.orgドメインはX.Org Foundation LLCが登録していますが、このLLC(合弁会社)はアメリカの501(c)3団体に認定される際に解体され、X.Org Foundation LLC創設時のメンバーでx.orgドメインを管理/登録したLeon Shimanさんはここ数年X.Orgと関わりを持っていないそうです。

The administrative/registration contacts around the X.Org domain are that of Leon Shiman, someone who used to be heavily involved in X.Org and was one of the organization’s found members but hasn’t been involved for quite a number of years.

　この問題は半年前から議論されており、同団体のKeithさんはSLFCと接触し現在最後の一手を試み、Peterさんは別のプランを用意しているようですが、

We need a legal trail from the LLC to the current org. Keith contacted SLFC for that.”

Their path forward is “Keith [Packard] to attempt a Hail Mary” while Peter Hutterer is to update the board on a “Plan B” in private on the board’s mailing list.

　ドメインが失効されればOS XのX QuartzにクレジットされているURLなども今後変更されるかもしれません。

　この問題は14日にShiman氏の協力により回避されたそうです。
