Appleは現地時間2018年08月29日、Appleが今年04月に発売を終了した「AirMac/AirPort (802.11n) Expressベースステーション」でAppleのホームオーディオシステム「AirPlay 2」をサポートする新しいファームウェア「Firmware update 7.8」の提供を開始しています。

Firmware update 7.8 adds AirPlay 2 support to 802.11n AirPort Express base stations.

AirMac Expressベースステーションのファームウェア・アップデートはmacOS/iOSのAirMacユーティリティから行うことが可能で、現在のところ公開されていませんがリリースノートによるとFirmware v7.8はいくつかのセキュリティ・コンテンツを含んでいるようなので、ユーザーの方は時間を見つけてアップデートすることをお勧めします。

AirMac ExpressベースステーションでAirPlay機能を有効にするにはmacOS/iOSのAirMacユーティリティ・アプリでAirPlay機能を有効にする必要があります。

完全サポート終了する前にEl capitan辺りからのAirMacユーティリティブリッジ接続ステータスが不明表示になるバグだけは直しておいてほしい。
