 Appleは本日、iMacをアップデートするとともに「Magic Keyboard」「Magic Trackpad 2」「Magic Mouse 2」という3種類のMagicデバイスを発表しましたが、これらの入力デバイスなどの研究開発を行っているAppleの「Input Design Lab」のインタビュー記事をMediumのチーフエディタSteven Levyさんが自身のBackchannelにて公開しています。


 今回インタビューに答えているのは

  • Appleのエンジニアリーダーで、Magicデバイスの開発に携わったKate Bergeronさん
  • MacやiPadのエコシステム&オーディオエンジニア担当でVPのJohn Ternusさん
  • Macのプロダクト・マーケティング担当でVPのBrian Crollさん
  • ワールドワイド・プロダクト・マーケティング担当上級副社長 Phil Schiller氏

 の4人で、AppleのInput Design LabはMacintoshやその周辺機器の研究開発が行われている所で普段は公開されない場所ですが、今回は特別にMagicデバイスの開発の裏側などが語られており、インタビュー内ではMagic Mouse 2の開発でマウスがテーブルの上を滑るさいに発生する音にまでにこだわったなどが掲載されているので、興味がある方はMediumへどうぞ。

The culprit appeared to be the little polycarbonate runners on the bottom of the mouse. “We changed the foot architecture,” says Bergeron, Apple’s VP for Ecosystem Products and Technologies. (Translation: you pound on her keyboards.) “And it changed the friction characteristics of the sound.”

A less-than-perfect noise isn’t a product killer, or even an official bug. Nonetheless, Apple’s engineers were determined to make sure the new iMac’s Magic Mouse 2 made a better sound as it glided across the desktop.
